Walkabout: Little Italy Farmer's Market

Went for a macro urban photography walkabout in San Diego's Little Italy during the Saturday farmer's market.  Had a great time and found some really awesome things to take photos of.  Thanks Dot for organizing the event!  See some of my favorites below.

Favorite Thoughts: Comic-Con 2013

Hey everyone!

I had the great opportunity to go to Comic-Con San Diego this past weekend.

It was really a blast!  Without a doubt the top highlight of the weekend was the opportunity to see Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo talk Batman.

They are both such passionate artists and have such an amazing understanding of the character and why he is so enduring.  There's no way I can do it justice here, so all I can say is that, if anyone has ever wanted to read new comics, you owe it to yourself to read Snyder's Batman (you can get it here).  You won't be disappointed.

The other panels I saw of note included some sneak peaks at the new season of Arrow on the CW (which really developed into an awesome show in it's first season), and an hour session with the incomparable Neil Gaiman:

On the more material side of things, DC comics We Can be Heroes charity event had a series of tricked out Kia's for auction to raise money for the benefit of aiding in the food crisis in the Horn of Africa, in addition to some awesome original artwork.  If you have a couple hundred to spare and are looking for some awesome pieces, check it out.  If not, check it out anyway to see some cool stuff.  Some images from the cars is presented below.

Of course, there were plenty of cool things for sale that didn't benefit a charity in any way, including some excellent large models and busts:

One of the other awesome things about comic con is just experiencing the whole downtown scene.  I can't think of another time of year where downtown San Diego is such a happening place, and where you have such large enthusiastic crowds all willing to wait in a huge line for some 200 yards ahead of you to take a photograph of a grown man dressed in a costume.  These next photos have less to do with the crowds though, and more the ambiance of Gaslamp District at night:

That last one, of course, sets up what everyone is really here to see, and that's people in awesome costumes. You can see those below:

 See you next year, Comic-Con!

Walkabout: UCSD

I've been inspired by some reading I did Sunday to work on my composition in photos, especially with everyday objects.  Today as I walked back to the bus from my office I took a few shots as daylight slipped away.  All shots on my Sony a77 with a Minolta 50mm f1.7 AF lens.

Flying to Seattle, Flying from Seattle

This last weekend I had a chance to fly back up to Seattle to attend my brother Sam's graduation from UW. It was a short trip, but an awesome one, with lots of great time with family.  Sharing photos from the graduation itself will have to wait for a different time or different venue though; today I wanted to share some photos from the flights themselves.

I was recently inspired flipping through an excellent book by Julieanne Kost (Go see her website here: http://www.jkost.net/).  I have always had an affinity for the window seat of an airplane, with all the amazing views you have at 30,000 feet, and this seemed like an excellent challenge to undertake.  I will need to go on many more flights to even come close to the brilliance and clarity Julieanne has been able to snap, but even at this point I enjoyed the great beauty I was able to observe, and hope you do too!
